Provincial government and LRM join forces for a sustainable and CO2-neutral Limburg

Thursday 18 June 2009
Frank Smeets, Member of the provincial Executive for Environment and Nature, and Hugo Leroi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of LRM, are signing an agreement whereby the province of Limburg and LRM mutually commit themselves to collaborate, with the goal of making Limburg CO2-neutral by 2020. To do so, LRM and the provincial government will urge Limburg to become a successful transition province, which capitalises on all opportunities – economic, social, technological – that present themselves in order to achieve the goal.

The signing parties are aware of the fact that, in order to achieve this goal, the entire Limburg society – civilians, businesses, local governing bodies, schools and associations – will have to contribute, each with their own competences, and work along in one large organised plan.

Complete action plan CO2

To assure the coherence, the complete action plan CO2 will be composed in a transparent, scientific and multidisciplinary way, whereby each action will be tested on effectiveness and efficiency. To do so, scientific support and a social discussion group will be put in place.

The partners see four domains in which Limburg can make the difference:
1. renewable energy production
2. low-energy construction, living and working
3. sustainable material flows
4. traffic and transport

LRM & province: complementary and committed

Based on these premises, both partners will start specific initiatives, each within their own policy and work domains.
The provincial government will first of all target the Limburgers, the local governing bodies and the social midfield with a focus on providing information, sensitization and discussion.
The LRM will take on a leading role with regards to Cleantech, for and by the Limburg-based businesses and knowledge partners.

Driving forces for a sustainable future

Both partners are convinced that tackling CO2 reduction in an innovative and integrated way, transition and adaptation, with the goal of coming to CO2 neutral situation, is a driving force for economic, ecologic and social development.

This way, Limburg capitalises maximally from the opportunities that are offered – people, planet, profit – to work on a sustainable and prosperous province.
